ASK THE BMXPerts: AN EYE FOR PHOTOGRAPHY
Bookmark and Share

Hi I’m thirteen and will be looking for a career in photography hopefully
alongside an urban, action magazine in a couple of years time although first
I’m seeking advice. I know its required to have an eye for photography
especially action shots and I’ve been told by many people that I have it. Also
I wanted to know what professional camera you would recommend to me?
Specifically for action shots and one that would be good for a beginner. Also,
what courses at college/university would I need to take to be an expert? I’ll
save more for when you reply, if your interested in seeing my work so far then
give me a shout:)
Thanks, Charlotte.

Having an eye for a good photo is key when taking up photography. The thing is, most people have an eye for a good photo, they just don’t know it, or they are too put off by the price of gear to put their eye to use. The good thing is, gear is getting cheaper and Photoshop is everywhere, so surmounting that hurdle is a little easier then it used to be. But what is more important then an “eye” for what your shooting is an understanding of what you are shooting. Anyone can pop a picture of a tailwhip, but what sets a good photographer apart from an average one is their ability to visualize the trick, where the rider will be at the peak of the trick and how that will relate to the background. This is why riders tend to make the best BMX photographers. As for school, take art classes and photo/digital editing classes. If you want to get more involved, learn how to write and shoot/edit video. If you can do all of these things and do them well, you will be a media gold mine. Good luck Charlotte
