ASK THE BMXPerts: NEW BIKE FOR AN OLD RIDER
Bookmark and Share

I used to ride freestyle a long time ago and recently I found out there is a skatepark in my new town. I am about to turn 39 and I am in decent shape. I am 5’ 10” and 135 pounds. I have no idea what bikes are good anymore so I thought I would write and ask if you can suggest a bike for me. I used to ride a GT and I thought I might go with one of them again. I don’t want to spend a ton of money, but I also want something that will last. Any suggestions?

Joe, the cool thing about BMX today is the completes are better and more affordable then ever and most of the brands that you remember are still going strong. Brands like GT, Redline, Haro, Hoffman, DK, Diamondback and more are still going strong and providing quality products. At your age and height, we would look for a bike with a 20.75” top tube, full chromoly construction and sealed bearings. At your age the last thing you want to do is spend hours every week adjusting loose ball bearings like you did when you were younger. Taller bars will save your back (8-8.5” tall) and don’t hesitate to spend a little extra for a larger padded seat like a MacNeil Phat Capital if your not happy with the skinny seats that are trending on completes right now. You should be able to land all of this for around $400-450. Good to have you back.
