ASK THE BMXPerts: HUB GUARD FOR UNSEALED REAR HUB
Bookmark and Share

I need help choosing a rear hub guard. I ride an unsealed quando 9t hub. I’ve
been looking for a hub guard but I don’t know which one is right. Help!

If you are riding an unsealed hub then you will need to find a hub guard that either threads on or one that slides over the existing hardware. Thread on guards are specific to axle size and thread pitch, but work well as they are designed to replace your outer lock nut and keep your rear end spacing tight. Finding one will be another story as there aren’t too many reputable brands making them any more as slide on style guards are easier to make and install. Slide on guards, like those made by Shadow, Daily Grind, S&M, United and many others are quick and easy to fit on most hubs, but they will require you to spread your frame open a bit to fit your wheel back into the dropouts. Your options for the drive side are going to be extremely limited. Primo makes a good drive side guard and is one of the very few that isn’t hub specific, so it may be one of your only drive side options. It is also available in alloy or plastic, which is another perk. Hope this helps.
