ASK THE BMXPerts: SPROCKET TROUBLES
Bookmark and Share

Q: Dear BMXperts,
I have a Hoffman Disrupter that’s about 4 years old but
my older brother took my sprocket and traded it for his but
when he put mine back on he put it on crooked and now
we can’t get it back straight. Could you please tell me how
to solve this problem. Please!
    Thanks!

A: Without seeing it, the first place we would check would be the sprocket spacer. This is the washer with a shoulder on it that will adapt a sprocket to fit a variety of three-piece crank spindle sizes and one-piece cranks. For starters, make sure it is there, the sprocket should fit snuggle over the spindle and not move side to side, even if the cranks are loose. If it is missing, replace it, but if it is there, check and make sure that it is still pressed in flush with the backside of the sprocket. Many times the spacer will back out when the sprocket is removed and not allow the sprocket to line up properly. Give those two things a shot and if they don’t help, shoot us a photo of the problem are and we will help set you straight.
