My Odyssey hub was clicking and skipping, so I replaced it with a Primo Cassette and it is doing the same thing only a few months later. What’s the deal?
Most cassette hubs use the same internals on the cassette body, so whether you are running an Odyssey or a Primo, chances are the guts are the same. The pawl system used is described as a “Wide 3 Pawl design” that gets its spring tension from a single “C-clip” that runs in a channel at the center of the driver. When the pawls are compressed by the teeth in the hub body, the C-clip is stretched open and as soon as the teeth clear the next engagement points, the tension on the clip will snap the pawls back open to catch. The thought is that sometimes the wide pawls don’t align properly and will “pop” into alignment. Don’t confuse this with a “Skip” where the cranks actually spin forwards for a short distance without catching as this could point to a larger problem. Overall, the “Pops” seem to be an issue riders can live with as it is an issue that has gone unresolved for the better part of a decade. If you still cant handle the noise every five to ten thousand revolutions, you might want to try a Profile or Madera hub which apply a completely different spring set up so each pawl is individually sprung and some find greatly reduces popping. Ultimately they will all make noise from time to time if you use them hard, we have even had mixed results with the same brands of hubs. The key is that the hub doesn’t skip, or eat bearings/bushing in the driver. Those issues aside, the pops seem to be topical in nature and we wouldn’t let them be the sole reason you drop more cash on a new hub.
