ASK THE BMXPerts: A GOOD FIRST BIKE
Bookmark and Share

I have just started BMX and I wanna get a BMX bike for Skateparks. I’m about 160lbs. What type of bmx bike should I get.

Weight is really less important then height, how fast you are growing and how tall you expect to get. Oh, and budget, the color of your hair and what’s available at your local shop. Ok, your hair color doesn’t matter, but generally speaking you will want to ride the bike you want before you buy it if you are new to the sport. All brands are slightly different in size and feel and without first sitting on one and testing the fit, you are only setting yourself up to be bummed out. Since you know what type of riding you want to do, check out a few bikes at your local shop and if you are currently tall or plan to grow, find a bike with a longer top tube, like a 20.75” or 21”. Quality brands start at about $250 in reputable shops and get up into the thousands of dollars, but for between $350 and $500, you can get a really good bike that is more then capable of handling your first few years of riding, like the Haro 400.1 for $499 or the Fit VH1 for $379. If you don’t have a local shop that supports BMX, try out your friends bikes and make sure what you buy is what you really want to ride.
