ASK THE BMXPerts: BARSPINS, THE WRONG WAY?
Bookmark and Share

Q: Yo BMX Plus!, you guys are my favorite magazine. My names Matt and I am 12 years old from Levittown, PA. I have been trying to learn barspins on flat. I read your How-To on them, but one question kept coming to my mind… Which way do I throw them? I ride with my left foot forward, I throw a ball with my left hand, but I write right-handed. Please help me!

A: Wow, you are messed up, you should join the circus! Actually, there is no such thing as “messed up” in BMX because every unique characteristic of your riding will eventually play to your advantage. In a perfect world you should throw towards your back foot, so left foot forward means you should throw to the right, but truly, there are no rules to the game. Throw the way you feel most comfortable. Look at Nyquist, he throws the bars the wrong way and he can do triple-trucks and Bohan can do three one-footed flatties, meaning something is backwards, but I cant quite figure out what because he rides so smooth. Spin to the right but peg stall on the right? Backwards yes, but now you can do 270’s out of your feebles and icepicks. You see, it all works out, so go with what feels best and don’t let anyone tell you that you have it backwards.
