ASK THE BMXPerts: TO RESTOR OR REPLACE FOR MY 10 YEAR OLD
Bookmark and Share

Hi,

I have a GT Performer bike from when I was a teenager, and now my son is wanting to ride it. It is in need of some upgrades as the bike is close to 25 years old. I have been looking around for some new parts, but I really have no ideas what the current brands are, and what would be good options for the following parts. What are some reputable shops where I can purchase these parts.

1)    Tires

2)    Brakes: calipers and handles for both front and rear

3)    Brake cables for Odyssey Giro

4)    Pegs for front and rear

5)    Grips

It has been sitting in a shed for a number of years and just needs some TLC to bring it back to a rideable condition for my 10yr old son. I have not been around BMX for 20+ years, so it is all brand new to me now.

Thanks in advance,

Rob

Rob, believe it or not, that bike is worth at least a few hundred bucks, even if it is in rough shape. Your best bet, if you’re not emotionally attached to it, would be to sell it and buy something modern. You would be blown away at the kind of performance you could get today for $350 or less. Brands like Haro, GT, Redline and more are still around and have awesome deals and quality that cant be matched with oldschool tech. If you like your bike, there are a lot of oldschool sites that focus on restorations and collectors items where you will be able to find classic parts and rebuild your Performer up into “like new” condition. Both are great options, but we wouldn’t offer up a collectors item to a ten year old, who is honestly just looking for a bike to beat on and learn on. Hope that helps Rob.
