ASK THE BMXPerts: TO RESTOR OR REPLACE MY HUTCH?
Bookmark and Share

Hi, my name is Jordan I am 15 and I  ride old school flatland on my dads hutch trick star. I have been riding for two years and I love it. My dad is my teacher and my favorite rider. I envy my dad so much. I really love riding his bike but i always fear I will break it. The price tag on the bike is ridiculous. Because my dad ran the best stuff he could. He has a candy apple red hutch trick star frame and forks, Peregrine 48 spoke sealed bearing rims, and woddy itson signature bars. We both love this bike and he wants to sandblast and repaint it. Were going to replace the worn out parts like brakes, grips, tires etc. But my question is should I put my Christmas money into the hutch or invest in a modern bike? My dad and I both love your magazine and have been reading it for years. thank you for what you do and keep doing it.

We would do both. Get a new bike now and invest in the Hutch over time. You know that is an expensive bike and while it is cool to strut your stuff on such a head turning ride, how would either of you feel if it got backed over in a parking lot, or you bent the bars on a cherry picker gone wrong? To be honest, you will get more out of your riding on a modern bike and appreciate your restoration more on the wall then you will constantly polishing scuff marks off your candy apple paint from riding.
