ASK THE BMXPerts: SHORT TOP TUBES AND BARSPINS
Bookmark and Share

Q: I am VERY VERY stuck and don’t know what to do. I am 5’ 5’’ and I’m going to buy a frame but I need the right top tube length. I think I need a 20.5” top tube but then I’m thinking when I learn barspins, I will need a 20.75” or 20.8”.  I’m stuck, please help. Thank you!

Danny Vetsalo

A: Danny, your concern is understandable, but don’t worry, a 20.5” top tube still offers plenty of room for the bars to spin, if your knees are where they are supposed to be. Provided you aren’t running some ridiculous 30” wide bars and your seat isn’t eight feet high, you shouldn’t notice any difference over a rider with a 21” top tube. When you bunnyhop barspin, your knees and legs should drop back next to the seat as you lean your upper body forward over the bars. If your form is wrong, it doesn’t matter how long your top tube length is, you will be knocking your knees with the bars. So get the 20.5” if that’s what you want, learn the proper barspin form and get busy truckin’ Dan.
