ASK THE BMXPerts: AFFORDABLE BIKE, FOR THE BEGINNING RIDER
Bookmark and Share

Q: Dear Sir, I was hoping for some advice. My 10-year-old son wants a BMX for his birthday, having previously had a mountain bike. He wants it to ride round with his mates trying the simple and basic tricks. I was hoping to spend around £200. I have seen on the internet 3 different bikes: the Subrosa Salvador street 2009,the GT Slammer 2010, and a Mongoose Program 2010 bike, all for around that price. Could you please tell me which one would be most suitable or of another bike which would be better, as I don’t know any thing about BMX bikes?
Thank you,
Vanessa Andrews

A: They are all great bikes, but for different applications. For our American readers, don’t feel too bad if your confused, not all of these bikes are available in the states, so there is good reason if you don’t recognize them. To get straight to the point and hopefully get your son straight to riding, we would go with the Mongoose or the Subrosa. The price and parts selection is pretty close and those are bikes better suited for an all around style of riding, where as the Slammer is more freestyle specific. Subrosa is also a cool selection because they offer a few different versions of the Salvador, so you can personalize your purchase somewhat. Hope that helps your purchase and we expect big things from your son. Remind him about this letter when he hits the big time.
