ASK THE BMXPerts: BARNEY HOPPING
Bookmark and Share

Q: I was wondering if the shorter the handlebars the more distance you have to pull up so you can bunnyhop higher. Does this make sense?

A:

Technically yes, this is true but before you rush out and buy a set of Grand Slams, the height of your bars and how far they have to move from point A to point B will have no effect on how high you can ultimately bunnyhop. Stand behind your bike and pull back on the bars so your front wheel is as high in the air as it can go and ask yourself this; will taller bars get that tire any higher off the ground? Sure, if you are runner 5.5” bars on a bike with a 44” wheelbase, then we can talk, but ultimately it is technique and practice that will get your hops in check. If that wasn’t the, wouldn’t you expect to find 12” rise bars on Brad Simms bike? If you are in the market for a “big bar” we feel an 8” rise bar is ideal for the all around rider.
