ASK THE BMXPerts: CRANKS COME LOOSE WHEN I RIDE
Bookmark and Share

Hey BMX Plus!,
I have a problem, when I pedal, my crank arm bolts come loose every couple of feet, what should I do?

ANS- For starters, make sure you have your crank arms on the right side. I know, it sounds dumb, but with all the bi-drive cranks out there, its an honest mistake even the best of us can make. The arm with the “R” on it should be on the right side of the bike when you are standing over it facing forward and the “L” on the left side. That done, grease your crank arm bolts and replace them. It may sound counter productive, but this will actually allow the bolts to be tightened to their full potential and actually stay in place better. If you have pinch bolts on the arms, a drop of red Loc-Tite does wonders to keep the arms from coming loose and trying to fight their way off and just for kicks, put a drop on your sprocket bolt so the entire package is tight and hopefully stays that way. If the problem persists, try the thread locker on the crank arm bolts as well.
