I ride brakeless because my frame can only take caliper brakes but I’m so use to riding brakeless, that I’ll forget that I have brakes and probably break a toe or something. So I’m wondering if I should get caliper brakes or not.
ANS- Aaron, caliper brakes are honestly pretty worthless. I grew up riding them when they were the only option and I probably would have been better off without brakes. The problem is, it sounds like you are ready to put some brakes back on and your frame is not equipped for the job. If you want brakes, or need brakes, more power to you for doing your own thing, but don’t be scared, even the most dedicated brakeless riders can hop on a bike with brakes and act like they never took their own off. Riding brakeless is a skill that has to be learned while riding with brakes is hardwired into all of us and an easy step to take. As for your frame, we would suggest trying to get your hands on a frame with removable brake mounts so you can bounce back and forth, with the best performance of both worlds, otherwise caliper brake performance may depress you into a coma. We did a little digging and found frames with removable mounts for as little as $189 for 2009 or even 2010 models from brands like Hoffman and Subrosa. Do some digging and you can always find the right frame for the right price.
