ASK THE BMXPerts: BIKE LOCK OR NEW BIKE
Bookmark and Share

Dear BMXperts,
My name is Matt, I have a RL 1.1 and I think is the coolest bike ever!! The thing is I am now in middle school and have to ride to school or walk. And who wants to walk, BUT my lock is not amazing. The thing is, I have a lot of money but I don’t really want to spend it on a lock. I am thinking about getting a Mongoose but what style? And remember I am in middle school so I don’t want some little kids bike or something like that. Thanks for your help.

ANS- Matt, if you have the money, buy the lock. If you don’t have the money on the other hand, buy the lock. In all of my years riding I have never had a bike stolen, not that I haven’t seen people try to run off with my bike, but they never made it very far because I never leave it unlocked or unattended. Don’t think your safe because your bike is locked up with a cheap lock at school either, that’s the first place a bike thief is going to look. I have even had people try to steal my bike out of the back of my truck while I was sitting in it. What saved my bike? A quality lock, every step of the way. What good is a new bike, or bragging about your old one if it can be gone in a heartbeat? So, while you are saving up to replace the money you spent on a lock, do yourself another favor and wait a few weeks for the January issue of BMX Plus! and the Dirt/Freestyle Buyers Guide, where you will find just about every bike and frame available, plus highlights, weights and prices. Armed with that info, you can be sure you are getting the best bike for the money and that when you do get it, you will have the best lock to keep it safe.
