ASK THE BMXPerts: NANO GEAR ON NON-NANO ARMS
Bookmark and Share

Hey BMX Plus!,
I just recently got an 8t back wheel and now I’m about to get a new sprocket probably a 22t or 23t and I’m not sure if the sprocket will fit my cranks because I don’t have “nano” drive cranks, do I need to have nano drive cranks for the cranks to be able to work with a 23t or 22t sprocket?
Thanks,
Tyler Buell

ANS- For all those readers unclear on what exactly Tyler is talking about, “nano drive” is any gearing smaller then micro drive gearing, or a 25/9. This means a 22 or 23/8 would be considered “nano”. Now, to address your question, you will need a nano compatible crank arm to apply a nano gear because the position of the sprocket bolt hole is closer to the spindle. Try to put a 23-tooth sprocket on your conventional crank arms and you will find the sprocket bolt hole wont align with the bolt boss. This is why you will see two sprocket bolt holes on nano compatible crank arms. All confusion aside, just get a spline drive sprocket and it will work with any crank set. Done!
