ASK THE BMXPerts: SORTING OUT 180’S
Bookmark and Share

Sup guys, I’m 13 and I’ve been riding for 7 months now, I cant 180, I can get the spin and the hop but I cant land without falling over. Every time I try I bend my rims. Can you give me some advice on how to land it with out falling?
Thanks,
Corvette S.

The first thing to jump out at us in your question is the bending of the wheels every time you try to 180. Unless you are a 500-pound gorilla, or someone stole all your spokes, there is no reason you should be bending your wheels, unless you are whipping your bike around and stopping your momentum by side loading your wheels. Step one would be to stop carving into your spins. Its natural to turn your front wheel a little as you take off, but you want to achieve most of your rotation by turning your body, allowing you to control the spin and stay centered over the bike. Sounds like your mistake is carving into a circle and then hopping, leaving the bike to do all the work. When you do this, the spin is low, fast and out of control. The problem is when it comes time to stop, your weights not over the bike but following it so you are side loading your wheels and bending them. Slow your motion down and work on getting your front wheel off the ground before jumping into your spin. Good Luck.
