ASK THE BMXPerts: ROLLING OUT OF ROLL BACKS

Hey BMXperts,
My name’s Corey, I’m 12 years old and I just got my new bike. I’ve been doing some riding with it and I just can’t get my roll backs down. I was wondering if you guys could give me any tips on my roll backs to help me land one.

Technically speaking, you don’t “land” a roll back, as you are already on the ground, but we hear what you are getting at and since we never miss the chance to make a wise crack, there it was and now we can get down to business. For starters, forget turning around, pretend it doesn’t happen, even for the biggest of pros and focus on simply rolling back. Make distance and balance the game. Roll up a small bank, hop a little and roll backwards as far as you can, even if its not in a straight line, its all about getting comfortable. Even if your rolling backwards in an endless circle, like someone flushed you down the toilet of life, you are still learning how to catch your balance and if your feet aren’t on the ground, your making progress. When you start to refine your roll backs into a somewhat straight line and the motions necessary to keep the bike upright become second nature to you, that is the time to start thinking about turning around. If you spin to the right, then you will want to turn out to the right, or if you spin to the left, then it will be the left. When you are rolling straight and stable, lean towards your turn, while at the same time turning out of it, so if you turn to the left, lean left and turn the bas to the right. The front end will come around really quick but if you keep your weight ahead of the bike, it will stay under you. When the bike gets halfway through the turn, you will want to step on your forward pedal, lift the front tire off the ground and turn your bars back into your turn while letting the momentum carry you around. It sounds complex, but if you try the steps slowly and understand them, this will be the easiest part of the trick. Good luck.
