ASK THE BMXPerts: SEALED BEARINGS FOR 1-PIECE CRANKS
Hey, my name is Nick, I’m 17 and I live in Minnesota. Just bought a Stolen Riot and it came with a one-piece crank and unsealed bearings. I am wondering if it is possible to put sealed bearings in it, and if that is something I could do or would I need to bring it in to a shop. Thanks
Nick, the best thing you could do for your current set-up would be a sealed mechanism bottom bracket, which is really just clever wording for saying it has an extra dust shield. The bummer is its not much better then what you currently have, and along with being tough to find, it will cost you roughly $12, versus a sealed American bottom bracket for a pair of three piece cranks which you could pick up for about $24. The best thing to do is keep riding what you’ve got, save your money and get an affordable set of three-piece cranks. Nitrous, Stolen and Mission all have cranks for under $60, so you could get out the door, with a BB, for under $100 and benefit long term from stronger, smoother and lighter cranks, versus throwing your money away on a short term band-aid for what ails you.
