Nope, half link chains will work on any gearing set up, race or freestyle. Just be sure you get the right width chain for your application. 1x2”x1/8” chains are most common on freestyle bikes while 1x2”x3/32” chains are more common on high-end race bikes. Also keep in mind that half link chains are not recommended on gear ratios smaller then 25/9. So feel free to upgrade Joe, don’t let us stop you.
