ASK THE BMXPerts: “WIPING” OUT ON BUNNYHOPS
Bookmark and Share

Hi, I’m Nicholas Piparo and I’m 12 years old. I just started BMXing about 8 months ago and my parents bought me a 2011 Kink Curb. I was wondering if you thought this is a durable and light beginner BMX bike? I also am a very suckish “J-HOPPER” or “BUNNY-HOPPER.” I can’t get higher than maybe a roll of toilet paper. I was also wondering if you could give me any tips on doing “J-HOPS.” Keep on with your skillz! Thanks!

For starters, the Kink Curb is a great starter bike and compared to what we got our start on, we would say you are at a huge advantage. Now, when you say roll of toilet paper, are we talking a regular single-ply roll, or one of those four-ply, double size rolls? Big, BIG difference between the two. The single-ply roll we would shrug off and say you’re doing all right for yourself at this point with a 5” hop, while the four-ply roll that’s the size of a truck tire and wont fit in any conventional toilet paper roll holder and more often then not ends up on the floor next to the toilet all because people are too lazy to replace the conventional rolls, would be way more impressive. Since there is such a broad range in your example Nicholas, why not make yourself a bunnyhop bar. Jumping over stuff is always easier then just hopping in an empty lot and having a friend say your ‘hop was “about as high as a roll of toilet paper”, so take two, three foot lengths of 2x4, put small nails in the front of each in one inch increments from the ground up and place a small dowel between the two. Now when you hop you know exactly how high you are going and you have something to physically jump over that wont disappear and/or get smaller every time the cheap seafood your buddy ate for lunch doesn’t agree with him.
