ASK THE BMXPerts: SPOKE LENGTH
Bookmark and Share

What’s up, my name is Josh I’m 18, and I need help. I have a Eastern Birectional wheel and I just bought a Primo Mix hub, but one side of the Eastern Birectional hub is smaller, so what size spokes do I need in order to install my new Primo Mix Hub on the stock rim that came with the Birectional hub?

Josh

ANS- People hate it when we say this but what can we do, it’s a fact. If your current wheel is four-cross, you can use the same spokes. Yes, we know, it sounds crazy but you can. On the flip side, if you have a three-cross lacing you will need new spokes, probably on both sides. There are spoke calculators online that factor spoke length by products, like hub brand and model and rim brand and model, or you can do it right and have your local shop do the math and get you the right spoke the first time. If all of this sounds like gibberish then you may just want to pawn the whole project off and someone more fit for the job. Wheels are no joke, build them right and they will last a long time, build them wrong and you will ruin them before you even get the tires on. The choice is yours Josh, we trust you will make the right one.
