ASK THE BMXPerts: BIKE FOR 6’6” RIDER
Bookmark and Share

I need help on finding a bike and I don’t know what I need. I’m a big guy about 6 foot 6 and I don’t know if I should get a bike with a 21 inch top tube or bigger. I have ridden bikes before and I like pretty much all styles of riding street, vert, you name it I’ll do it. I was wondering if there was a certain type of bike good for this. I don’t want to spend a whole bunch of money on this id like to keep it under $400. Any help you could give me would be great thanks.

ANS- Your biggest limitation Tyler is going to be your price range. The problem is there are great frames out there for tall people with longer top tube lengths, ranging from 21” to 22.5”, but then you have to build that frame up and that gets expensive. At 6’6” you are not only tall, but we are guessing weigh a good chunk of change, so you can’t rely on a cheap bike either. For starters, avoid the temptation to ride street and park on a 24” cruiser, they are heavy and not effective for the serious rider. While a 21” will still feel a little cramped for you there are a growing number of brands offering reasonably priced completes with longer top tube lengths, like the Premium Solo Plus which retails for $399 with a 21” top tube length. A bike like this is ideal to get you rolling and as you save up a little cash, you can go with a longer 55mm stem or laid back Pivotal post to give yourself a bit more room. In a perfect world we would suggest calling up S&M and having them make you a custom 22.5” top tube frame, but save blowing your entire budget on just the frame, we feel the Premium is a great second option.
